Sarah A. Dowding (Survey of London, Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London)

Innovative methodological approaches can help explore the ways in which people develop emotional attachments to historic urban places. With a focus on the powerful relations that form between people and places, our speakers adopt people-centred methodologies to examine the ways in which emotional attachments can be accessed, researched, interpreted and documented. The approach demonstrates how different research methods can be used to better understand the cultural values of heritage places. The seminar involves contributors to the new edited book collection People-Centred Methodologies for Heritage Conservation (Routledge, 2021).

Session 3 will explore Trauma and Heritage with the ICOMOS Emerging Professionals Working Group

Trauma can be inflicted in many circumstances following natural disasters and armed conflicts, affecting entire communities, and can even be transmitted from one generation to the next (transgenerational trauma). Indeed, these events (earthquakes, tsunami, pandemic, colonialism, terrorism, domestic conflicts, displacement, ethnic and cultural cleansing, etc.) can cause deep wounds and damage to the psyche of those affected. Consequently, such events and traumas can impact and transform tangible and intangible cultural heritage practices (changing local traditions) and materiality (caused by, e.g., a tsunami or bombing), and/or in their interpretation (heritage dissonant in its contrast of meanings and values between past and present).

By encouraging people-centred approaches, decision-makers enable heritage to become a resource for conflict resolution and for the social, economic and cultural development of the territory in which it is located. Through case studies in different contexts, the webinar will reflect on the role of cultural heritage conservation in addressing the trauma experienced by local communities.

Railway Heritage Preservation Conference Findings, positions and methods

Railway Heritage Preservation Conference

Findings, positions and methods

The Railway Heritage Preservation Conference – originally planned for 25/26/27 November2021 – has generated an unexpected level of interest among specialists. In response to our callfor papers, we received numerous abstracts at both the national and international levels. Weare sure this will make for a high-quality and exciting programme and are delighted and highlymotivated by the response!

Unfortunately, we must inform you that we have decided to postpone the event. Given the current development of the Covid-19 pandemic and the related protection measures, the risk thatthe conference cannot be held or can only be held in a greatly reduced form has become toogreat. Hosting the conference on a smaller scale or virtually is not an option because the conference has been conceived with the specific aim of generating lively discussion and personalexchange between the participants.

For this reason the conference has been postponed. Our preparations will continue undisturbed. The project team will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Information on the conference can be found on the website www.railway-heritage.ch – the program will also be published there. You can also sign up to the newsletter to stay up to date withnews about the conference.
