This illustrated talk on the architectural heritage of Kuala Lumpur is based on the speaker’s experience as a ‘KL city boy’ and his pioneering efforts for conservation and rehabilitation of historic buildings in Kuala Lumpur. His ‘story’ will touch on his involvement in the restoration and ‘adaptive reuse’ of Kuala Lumpur’s Industrial Courts, Infokraf Centre (today the National Textile Museum),the KL Library (today this is the KL Gallery) and his adaptation work of the residence of the British Resident to Malaya into a boutique hotel of Carcosa Seri Negara.
Dato’ Ar. Hajeedar Majid graduated in Architecture from Portsmouth Polytechnic (UK) and practiced in Brighton before returning to Malaysia and served Urban Development Authority (UDA) as Architect and Deputy Director (1973-78). An active member of the Institute of Malaysian Architects (PAM) he served as PAM President from 1985-1987. He manages an architectural practice, Hajeedar and Associates Sdn, since 1978. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Architecture, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and a recipient of the prestigious PAM Gold Medal 2012. Other personal and professional awards include the Penguin Prize by Norwegian Government in 1985 for his conservation and restoration works, and the Darjah Kebesaran Sharafuddin Idris Shah (DSIS) in 2009. Today, he is Chairman of the Majlis Warisan Kebangsaan under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.
The event is open to the public with free admission but donations for the ‘Heritage Cause’ at the door are welcomed. Light refreshments will be served.
