The focus of the conference will be on the former plantation structures around Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. This is just an example of the many former colonial plantations around the world that are in a position of change. Production of sugar, coffee, cotton and other tropical products have changed. The former plantations offer a wide variety of historical cultural elements (buildings, landscape, and even traditions, genealogy, songs, beliefs) that are part of the identity of the people of the country involved. Can these plantations can be (re)used in a way that part of this culture and identity will be preserved.
The SBH Conference 2010 takes place under the tile of New life for historic cultural landscapes: examples of creative policy plans.
