Day1: Building Back Better: Responding to the Impacts of COVID-19 Pandemic on Nigeria’s Heritage

The impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on heritage across various countries are beyond measure
and calls for varying degree of response. In Nigeria, for instance, the government responded
by locking down various organisations, communities and even several states implemented
series of restrictions which affected and still affecting operations of many museums, heritage
sites and heritage-related organisations. Various stakeholders, however, believed that the impacts have been more negative than positive.
Therefore, the Emerging Professionals Working Group (EPWG), ICOMOS Nigeria with the support of National Commission for Museums and Monuments conducted a nationwide study to understand the impacts and develop strategies to respond to the impacts on Nigeria’s heritage during the pandemic and ‘build back better’ post-pandemic.
On Day 1, the report of the nationwide study will be launched and three panellists from various fields of endeavour will engage in discussion laying out the strategies that can be implemented by the stakeholders in Nigeria heritage sector.
