ICOMOS “Our Common Dignity Initiative” x ICOMOS Brazil online workshop

Human rights and heritage management online workshop
Our Common Dignity Initiative x ICOMOS Brazil

Our Common Dignity Initiative, together with ICOMOS Brazil, are looking forward to offering a week-long workshop on Human Rights and Heritage Management where we focus on what can be considered the two most difficult aspects of human rights theory:

  1. how do we understand “culture” and
  2. how can we deal with the fact that some rights are group-based or collective and others are individual? How can we balance conflicts between the rights of different communities?

To submit your application, you must submit a summary in which you address a specific issue or problem in your own work that seems to involve human rights and which you suspect can be better managed or resolved by being more human rights conscious. How has it been addressed historically and what is the current management approach?

Send your short report to hrba@icomos.org.br by 30 October 2020. Summaries related to the workshop proposal will be selected.

The workshop will be held in Spanish from 9am to 5pm (-3 UTC), in online format. There is a limit of 25 participants. The target audience is researchers, professionals and managers of cultural heritage. The online format allows the admission of applicants from anywhere.

ICOMOS Webinar Series | Sustainable Development Goals Working Group (SDGWG)

Webinar 2- Economy & Prosperity: Driving Community-Based Sustainable Development through Cultural Tourism and Employment (SDGs 5, 8, 12 and 14)

Travel & Tourism is a dynamic engine of employment opportunities, where jobs in the industry particularly support women, youth and other, often marginalised groups of society. In 2019, Travel & Tourism’s direct, indirect and induced impact accounted for US$8.9 trillion contribution to the world’s GDP, or 10.3% of the global total, and 330 million jobs, representing 1 in 10 employed around the world. In January 2020, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Tourism Barometer recorded that international tourist arrivals worldwide grew 4% in 2019 to reach 1.5 billion visitors in total. Based on current trends at that time, economic prospects and the UNWTO Confidence Index, the organization forecasted a growth of 4% in international tourist arrivals worldwide in 2020.

The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 knocked this upward trajectory sideways. There was a massive drop in international travel demand over January-June 2020, which translated into a loss of 440 million international arrivals and approximately US$460 billion in export revenues from international tourism. This is about five times the loss in international tourism receipts recorded in 2009 amid the global economic and financial crisis.

By focusing on a destination’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage, stakeholders including governments, destination management organizations, tour operators and associated businesses, and communities can all play key roles and benefit from tourism’s rejuvenation, resiliency and recovery from COVID-19. This webinar will provide an overview of the current and future view of the cultural tourism-supported visitor economy, and the design and implementation of innovative cultural tourism-related digital and funding platforms incorporating the tourism and employment SDG Targets outlined below:

SDG Target 5a: Undertake reforms to give women equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to ownership and control over land and other forms of property, financial services, inheritance and natural resources, in accordance with national laws.

SDG Target 8.9: By 2030 devise and implement policies to promote sustainable tourism which creates jobs, promotes local culture and products.

SDG Target 12b: Develop and implement tools to monitor sustainable development impacts for sustainable tourism which creates jobs, promotes local culture and products.

SDG Target 14.7: By 2030 increase the economic benefits to SIDS and LDCs from the sustainable use of marine resources, including through sustainable management of fisheries, aquaculture and tourism.

“Technology and Heritage Sites promoting Climate Action”

Recent years have seen a robust response from the cultural heritage sector to the threat of climate change. From developing sectoral adaptation plans for heritage assets to ensuring built structures are carbon efficient, the sector has a unique role to play in the climate emergency.

The complex intersections between heritage and climate change were recently explored in detail by the ICOMOS Working Group on Climate Change and Heritage. Their report – Future of Our Pasts: Engaging Cultural Heritage in Climate Action – was released by ICOMOS at the 43rd session of the World Heritage Committee in Baku, Azerbaijan in July 2019.

Jane Downes and Will Megarry will be presenting at this event as the lead authors of this report: this ICOMOS-UK talk will explore how iconic heritage sites can be utilised to stress urgency about climate change and raise global ambition to respond.

The event will provide an overview of the Future of our Pasts report, followed by an introduction of the Heritage on the Edge project, which was launched in January 2020 and was a collaboration between the Working Group, CyArk and Google Arts and Culture to explore the issue of climate change from the perspective of five world heritage sites. Specifically, the issues and successes of the project will be discussed in detail with relation to the Rapa Nui (Easter island) case study. The presentation will then explore the reach and impact of the project six months after its launch.

Speakers:
  • Professor Jane Downes PhD, MCIfA(ICOMOS-UK and University of Highlands and Islands)
  • Dr William P. Megarry PhD, FSA, FHEA (ICOMOS Ireland and Queen’s University Belfast)

20:00 – 21:00 CEST
